In a landmark moment for space tourism, Virgin Galactic is set to launch its first-ever private spaceflight, Galactic02, today, featuring an inspiring crew line-up that includes a former Olympian and a pioneering mother-daughter duo. As the space tourism industry continues to soar, this mission aims to push the boundaries of accessibility and adventure beyond our planet's confines.

Following the success of Virgin Galactic's inaugural commercial journey earlier this summer, which facilitated scientific research in low orbit, this latest endeavour marks a significant leap forward in recreational space travel. The company envisions making these extraordinary spaceflights a monthly occurrence, with ticket prices ranging from £191,000 to £344,000, an investment that promises unforgettable memories and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

The spotlight of Galactic02 rests on its diverse and inspirational crew, which includes 80-year-old Jon Goodwin, a former Olympian hailing from Newcastle, who competed in canoeing during the 1972 Munich Games. What sets Jon apart is that he will become the second person with Parkinson's disease to reach the edge of space, defying adversity to fulfil his dream. Jon expressed his hope that his journey would inspire others facing challenges, demonstrating that dreams can be pursued regardless of obstacles.

Accompanying Jon on the pioneering voyage are Keisha Schahaff, a 46-year-old wellness coach, and her 18-year-old daughter Anastatia Mayers, who are poised to become the first astronauts from the Caribbean and the first mother-daughter pair to embark on a spaceflight together. Anastatia, who studies philosophy and physics at the University of Aberdeen, encapsulates the ambition and curiosity of the younger generation reaching for the stars. Keisha, a dedicated life coach, anticipates that her profound experience in space will radiate into her roles as a mother, mentor, and advocate for our planet's well-being.

The spacecraft, VSS Unity, will be piloted by CJ Sturckow and Kelly Latimer, with astronaut instructor Beth Moses joining the crew. The launch is scheduled to take place at Spaceport America in New Mexico, with the window for take-off opening at 4pm UK time (3pm GMT) today. The VSS Unity will be carried by the VMS Eve plane to release altitude, at which point the spacecraft's powerful rocket engine will ignite, propelling it to an altitude of approximately 50 miles above Earth's surface.

Although VMS Eve's pilots, Nicola Pecile and Mike Masucci, will not reach space themselves, their critical role in facilitating this groundbreaking journey cannot be understated. As the spacecraft breaches the celestial boundary, the crew will experience approximately five minutes of weightlessness and breathtaking views before beginning their descent back to Earth. The entire flight, from launch to landing, is expected to span around 90 minutes, leaving an indelible mark on the passengers' lives and memories.

Keisha Schahaff and Anastatia Mayers earned their coveted spots on Galactic02 through a contest that raised funds for Space for Humanity, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing ordinary citizens with the transformative opportunity to witness Earth from space. This initiative aligns with Virgin Galactic's broader mission to broaden perspectives and foster a deeper appreciation for the challenges our planet faces.

As Virgin Galactic's Galactic02 prepares to breach the bounds of our atmosphere, the world watches with bated breath, eager to witness the culmination of dreams, dedication, and pioneering spirit. The success of this mission signifies not only another stride forward for space tourism but also a testament to the indomitable human spirit that propels us beyond the stars.
