In Hampshire, the memory of Stephen Harrington, a beloved father, brother, son, and friend, shines brightly through the compassion and determination of his family and friends. A year after his tragic passing, they have come together to organise an annual charity football match that not only celebrates Stephen's life but also raises funds for two essential causes.

Stephen Harrington's story is one of warmth, kindness, and love. A resident of Rowlands Castle, he was known for his genuine concern for others and his unwavering presence in the lives of those around him. Tragically, Stephen's life was cut short in July 2022 when he was found critically wounded on Marlpit Lane in Woodmancote, Emsworth, following a heartless assault. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he passed away two days later, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Stephen's family and friends are determined to ensure that his legacy lives on. The inaugural charity football match is set to take place at the Draper Tool Community Stadium in Westleigh Park, Havant, on Sunday, 20th August. This event is not only a tribute to Stephen's memory but also a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and the power of community.

The significance of this event extends beyond the field. As attendees gather to watch the match and participate in the raffle held at the nearby Westleigh Pub, they will be contributing to the well-being of others in Stephen's name. Tickets for the event are priced at £3 for adults and are free of charge for children, making it an inclusive occasion that welcomes everyone to partake in the celebration of a life well-lived and a legacy that endures.

The two causes selected for this charity match reflect Stephen's values and his enduring spirit. Donations raised during the event will be directed towards the Mental Health Marathon, an organisation dedicated to promoting mental well-being, and Simon Says, a child bereavement support service that provides comfort and guidance to young individuals facing loss.

Lucy Butlin, Stephen's sister, spoke with warmth and affection about her brother's enduring legacy. She shared that Stephen played a pivotal role in her upbringing, serving as both a brother and a father figure. "He was just always there at the end of a phone – any time, any day. He genuinely got on with everybody – he was just a kind-hearted person," Lucy said. Through this annual charity football match, his kindness and spirit will continue to touch lives, proving that even in his absence, Stephen's impact remains profound.

Remembering Stephen Harrington - A life cut short by tragedy

While the charity football match serves as a heartwarming tribute to Stephen Harrington's enduring spirit, it's important to reflect on the circumstances that led to his untimely passing in July last year. Stephen's life was tragically taken by an act of violence that shocked his community and robbed his loved ones of a cherished presence.

Stephen - 47 at the time - was asleep in his van on the fateful day when he was ambushed by three individuals: Thomas Goldring, Joseph Butler, and Tarin Linfield. Mistakenly believing there was cannabis to steal from the land, the trio unleashed a brutal assault on Stephen at his Marlpit Lane site. Armed with equipment, they approached the scene with ill intentions, fuelled by greed and a misguided belief.

The attack left Stephen critically injured, and despite being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries two days later. The court proceedings revealed the shocking details of the assault – Linfield, Butler, and Goldring arrived at the isolated location, each armed with various implements. Goldring, later discovered to have taken his own life, delivered the fatal blow(s) to Stephen, inflicting severe trauma that proved to be fatal.

In a statement that resonates with the impact of Stephen's life, Her Honour Justice Laing KC emphasised the tragedy of the situation. She highlighted Stephen's aspirations, dedication, and hard work to create a better life for himself, which were brutally cut short by the greed and dishonesty of the assailants. The assault was not a spur-of-the-moment crime; it was a calculated act that ended a life of promise and robbed a family of their beloved member.

Justice Laing's words echoed the sentiments of many who knew Stephen, highlighting his determination and work ethic. The attack was a stark contrast to the life Stephen lived – one marked by kindness, support, and compassion. The assailants' actions were described as an act of moral cowardice, leaving Stephen to die alone and exposed to the elements.

As the memory of Stephen Harrington lives on through the annual charity football match and the causes it supports, his legacy stands as a testament to the enduring power of love and community. In a world often marred by tragedy, Stephen's story reminds us that even in the face of darkness, the light of his spirit continues to guide those who knew and loved him.
